I’m a greeting card company now.
Eat your heart out, Hallmark.
One of my previous employers contacted me asking if I could make some greeting cards for her restaurant. I love Domaine South, the staff, and have fond memories of studying wine and viticulture while working there, of forging unexpected friendships over unexpectedly beautiful glasses of grape juice. And I loved the idea of making my own cards, so I said yes.
She wanted birthday and anniversary cards. I hand drew each glass of wine and hand wrote each original sentiment. I really like how they turned out.
My inspiration behind the anniversary epithet, “time slips through / my fingers, but I / will never let you.” was devotion, (or the idea of) pure devotion. And how lately, time seems to be moving faster than ever. Maybe that’s life—that every year that passes is a smaller fraction of the life you’ve lived. And maybe that’s autumn—when there’s a primal, evolutionary urge to count your blessings, to see if they’re gonna last you through the winter. That I always feel haunted when the leaves fall, that I feel heavier with new haunts each passing September.
The birthday cards read “I’m just so glad / you were born.” which has sort of become a chant, a spell to me. It’s how I say happy birthday. The best writing (and spells) comes from honesty.
If you’re interested in your own greeting cards, send me a message. You’ll find them at Domaine South in downtown Huntsville now, or at Brickydella Vintage in the near future.
